Traveling Informed: Useful Information

When you hear about crystal-clear seas, palm trees, fishing villages, and colonial-style town buildings, your first thought likely goes to Caribbean islands, highly sought after by both snorkeling and water sports enthusiasts as well as those who prefer relaxing beach days with sun and cocktails. However, even in the Caribbean, there are completely unexpected places that astonish with their uniqueness: this is the case of the Turks and Caicos Islands, which are quite different from most of the atolls touched by the Caribbean Sea. If you've never heard of them or have no idea how to get there, this article is for you: we will specifically tell you where they are, how to reach them from Europe, and we have selected some of the main points of interest worth visiting once you arrive on the islands.

Where They Are and How to Get There

Where They Are and How to Get There

The Turks and Caicos Islands make up a Caribbean coral archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean. The archipelago consists of two main groups of islands: Grand Turk Island and Salt Cay Island; the Caicos group includes 28 little islets and dreamlike atolls, both small and slightly larger. Being a British Overseas Territory, the official language is English, while the current legal system is based on the Common Law established by the motherland. In particular, Grand Turk Island is the political, administrative, and cultural center of the entire archipelago and is also where the capital, Cockburn Town, has been located since 1766.There are no direct flights from the U.S. to the Turks and Caicos Islands. We recommend taking a direct flight to the United States (perhaps to New York) and from there taking a second flight connecting the mainland to Grand Turk Airport (the largest in the archipelago) or to other airports on smaller islands. Considering possible layovers, the journey could take anywhere from 13 to 20 hours depending on the connections. Compare flights from Rome or Milan

When to Go? Information on Climate and Best Time

When to Go? Information on Climate and Best Time

Climate is predominantly warm and humid year-round, alternating between two seasons, the hotter one from May to October (when most precipitation occurs) and the "fresher" one from December to March. Daily average temperatures are quite high, averaging 28° in summer and 23° during winter months. However, the presence of breezes from the U.S. can lower the perceived temperatures, making the climate pleasant almost all year round. The sea water also maintains a relatively high temperature averaging 28°. Finally, note that rainfall is less here than in the rest of the Caribbean, averaging 120mm of water during the wettest month, which appears to be November. Still, be cautious of the risk of tropical hurricanes that can strike suddenly with great force during summer days. Best Period from January to April, when the weather is pleasant with no risk of excessive rain or heat. Period to Avoid from August to October, when tropical depressions and hurricanes can easily occur. Tips It is necessary to pack both lightweight clothing suitable for sunny beach days and a few heavier items (jeans, sweater, light jacket) for the evenings or periods of higher humidity. Don't forget a scarf for windier days, a raincoat or a waterproof jacket, sunscreen, insect repellent, and... of course, everything necessary to capture every moment of your dream vacation.

Main Islands: Which Island to Visit?

1 - Grand Turk

grand turk

Grand Turk is the main island of the Turks. Here, you will find the airport that allows the most connections to the mainland. Additionally, the capital, Cockburn Town, and the most important nightlife spots are also located here. Choosing to visit Grand Turk means opting for an authentic place where powdery white beaches, restaurants serving typical Creole cuisine, museums, and plenty of entertainment coexist. Get directions

2 - Salt Cay

Salt Cay is the other major island that makes up the Turks group. Quieter compared to its "neighbor", Salt Cay is a small oasis of peace, sought after by nature enthusiasts as well as for whale watching, as it is possible to spot humpback whales that migrate to Greenland and Iceland in certain months of the year. 3 - Providenciales

Providenciales is a small island located between New York and the Dominican Republic. We recommend it especially if you want to retreat from the rest of the world for at least a few hours. Its beaches are the most beautiful in the entire archipelago, and you can also rent wonderful sea-view villas on the island (if you're traveling in a group, this can be a great option). How Much Does a Vacation in Turks and Caicos Cost? Prices, Deals, and Tips

Although the Turks and Caicos Islands are not among the most sought-after Caribbean destinations (unlike the Bahamas, Cuba, and other more renowned locations), the use of the United States dollar as the official currency makes the cost of living slightly higher than one might expect, although choosing to eat street food or in not-too-chic restaurants often results in affordable food costs (approximately $10.00/$15.00 per meal). Regarding accommodations, all-inclusive resorts are very popular, although other more economical options (apartments, B&Bs, etc.) are also available. Additionally, as only 8 out of over 40 islands are inhabited, this may entail additional costs for excursions and/or sea transfers if you wish to explore the surroundings. The main travel costs will be airfare: this is why we recommend searching well in advance for a good deal instead of waiting for unlikely last-minute discounts.
