Built by order of dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu (also known as Ceaușescu's Folly) between 1970 and 1974 to allow Romanian troops quick passage through the Carpathians in the event of a Soviet invasion, it starts from the city of Bascov and winds through the highest mountains of Romania, offering breathtaking views. The Transfagarasan is open only 4 months a year, those being the summer months, due to weather conditions.
