The initial construction dates back to 1731, a few years after the founding of the city, but it was immediately rebuilt and transformed between 1753 and 1756. The statue of Our Lady of Rosario was brought to the church directly from Cádiz, Spain, only in 1773. The minor basilica we see today is the result of restoration work on the facade and tower that took place in 1927. The interior features a single nave, and the altar is made of Italian marble.
