Is It Worth Paying with a Credit Card Abroad?
Most Italians are still hesitant to use Credit and Debit Cards (ATM cards), not only in Italy but also abroad. One might wonder, in light of our fellow citizens' hesitation, why in certain countries, both within and outside the EU, Credit and Debit Cards are much more widespread compared to cash: is it a matter of education? Mindset? Technology?
Let's explore why and how to use Credit Cards and Debit Cards abroad.
Do You Need a PIN for Credit Cards Abroad?
- The PIN is not required for most commercial transactions abroad when using a Credit Card; it's enough to "swipe" the Card as we know it;
- The PIN may be required in some cases when paying with your Credit Card, as an alternative to signing. This depends on the type of POS available, or a specific choice, since some believe the PIN is more secure than the simple "swipe";
- The PIN is essential it remains confirmed that it is necessary for withdrawing cash from an enabled ATM. However, be careful, as this transaction may incur a fee depending on the network and/or banking institution.
How to Use an ATM Abroad
Contrary to what many believe, the Debit Card (ATM) often proves to be the most economical cash withdrawal tool when in a European country: it's advisable to have a Debit Card valid for use abroad and linked to an online checking account, as online checking accounts offer considerably lower service fees compared to those opened in a branch, and have reduced or sometimes even no fees.
In this regard, here is an interesting study conducted by SOS Tariffe, showing the convenience and costs of withdrawal and payments between Debit Cards linked to a traditional account, Debit Cards linked to an online account, and Credit Cards:
- Payments within EU countries Free with all cards.
As indicated by this study, payments with Debit and Credit Cards are always free within European countries. - Withdrawals within EU countries ATMs.
Debit Cards linked to an online account allow for an average savings of at least 30% compared to an ATM linked to a traditional checking account and even about 90% compared to a Credit Card. - Withdrawals in non-EU countries ATMs.
ATMs are still the most cost-effective method for withdrawing cash in Non-EU countries. - Payments in Non-EU countries Credit Card.
For payments outside the European Union, Credit Cards tend to be more convenient, but only for smaller amounts, under the threshold of 100 euros. Otherwise, the ATM remains superior.
Do Visa and Maestro Cards Work Abroad?
Abroad, Visa Cards are widely used and supported by the innovative Visa Travel App for smartphones: Visa guarantees high levels of protection and security. Also, Maestro, the international Debit Card network of the Mastercard group, is increasingly used and trusted for transactions beyond Italian borders.
Withdrawals and Payments Abroad: Helpful Tips
As shown above, while payment in commercial establishments using Credit and Debit Cards within European countries is free, caution must be taken regarding cash withdrawals at enabled ATMs: if you find yourself in a European country, it is generally more cost-effective to use the Debit Card (ATM) compared to the Credit Card, whereas if you are located in a Non-EU country, you should check in advance with your bank to understand how favorable using a Debit Card is and where it is preferable to use a Credit Card.
